We are honored to advocate for people with disabilities and we are thrilled that Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature have made funds made available in this year’s budget to improve the wages for Direct Support Professionals (DSP), the front-line workers who take care of the individuals that we serve. Direct Support Professionals assist people with mobility limitations in eating, dressing, positioning, and other activities of daily living. They also provide supervision, medication assistance, meal preparation and companion services.
DSPs are critical to the ability of people with intellectual and physical disabilities to live independently and work in their home communities. Yet, there is a severe shortage of these employees throughout Florida. Without more DSPs, many individuals living on their own are now faced with moving to a group home, or from a group home to an institution.
Like all other provider agencies across the state, The Arc North Florida always needs more DSPs to continue our programs. Important qualities for someone who wants to start their career in this field are enthusiasm, empathy, patience, reliability and the desire to make a positive difference in the life of people with a disability. A college degree isn’t required - just a passion to help others. Those who choose this career will be trained and quickly on their way to success.
